What is Balayage?
Balayage is a French hair coloring technique where the color is applied manually with a freehand. This creates a natural-looking color distribution that mimics the effects of sunlight on your hair. The color is applied with a brush, with the focus on creating soft, flowing transitions and subtle highlights.
Where does the name Balayage come from?
The name “balayage” comes from the French word “balayer,” which means “to sweep.” This refers to the way the color is applied to the hair in a sweeping motion. The technique originated in France in the 1970s and has since gained popularity worldwide for the natural, sun-kissed look it creates.
What is the difference between highlights and balayage?
Although both balayage and highlights are techniques for lightening hair, there are some key differences:
- Highlights are achieved by selecting small sections of hair and wrapping them in foils. A lighter shade of hair dye is applied to each foil, resulting in distinct streaks of lighter color that contrast with the natural hair color.
- Balayage is a technique where the color is applied by hand. The paint is “painted” on the hair in strategic places, creating a natural transition from the natural hair color to the lighter shades.
So highlights create bold streaks of lighter color, while balayage produces a softer, more natural transition from dark to light.
How long does Balayage last?
The duration of a balayage treatment can vary depending on several factors, such as the thickness and length of the hair, the desired results and the experience of the hairdresser. In general, a balayage session can last between 3 and 6 hours. Thicker and longer hair or more complex color wishes may require more time to achieve a beautiful and natural-looking result. It is always a good idea to discuss with your hairdresser before the appointment how long the treatment will approximately take, so that you can take this into account in your planning.
How long should Balayage be left on?
The processing time of balayage depends on several factors, such as your natural hair color and the desired lightness. On average, the color should be left on for 45 to 90 minutes.
