Many people confuse this treatment with applying highlights. However, there are five distinctive differences. Where we apply the color to any area of the hair with this treatment, we apply highlights by wrapping specific hair strands in aluminum foil to apply the color.

Because we are not using foil here, but working freehand, we are treating the hair from the hair surface (and not from the root), starting with narrow strokes of color between the natural hair. As we go down, the strokes become wider and we apply more hair with hair dye.

This difference in application gives Balayage a natural and more subtle effect, while Highlights are more striking and contrasting.

The length of a successful treatment depends on a number of factors, such as the length of your hair, how porous your hair is, and the finishes you want. In general, foiling your hair will take between 30 and 60 minutes, and a total treatment will take around three hours.
