Always beautiful highlights at Ferry's Hairstudio in The Hague
Placing Highlights is a treatment that we perform for many clients. We will explain what you can expect from this treatment and what the difference is between Highlights and other treatments such as Balayage. We will also explain how we place the perfect Highlights for you and answer practical questions.
What are Highlights?
We place Highlights by wrapping selected hair strands in aluminum foil and applying color to them so that these strands become lighter than the rest of the hair. In this way we create contrast and depth.
Many people confuse Highlights with another treatment, Balayage. However, both treatments are different and lead to different results.
What is the difference between Highlights and Balayage?
Where with Highlights we color specific hair strands, with Balayage we can color any area of the hair. Also, for Balayage we work from the hair surface, while for this treatment we work from the hair root. The result is that these color accents are contrasting and striking, while Balayage gives a more natural and subtle effect.
At Ferry's Hairstudio you can also go for a perfect Balayage. You can read more about this on our page about Balayage.
What types of Highlights are there?
A good hair studio makes a choice of different types of Highlights to give depth to your hairdo in a beautiful way and to emphasize the right contours of your face. We use different techniques for this.
- Full Highlights: with this way of highlighting you get the most striking result. This is because for this treatment we put the foils through the entire hair and therefore also color the contours and neck area.
- 3/4 Highlights: the focus of the treatment is on your neck. We place the foils in the hair from the ears to the bottom of the hair. This creates depth when you look at the neck from the front. The contrast creates a natural effect. If you apply this highlighting to a high bun, the neck can actually look darker. This gives, if you do it the right way, a beautiful and modern look.
- Half: with this way of highlighting we apply lighter colouring from the top of the hair. This way we create a light and natural accent that emphasises the contours of your face. In addition, this creates a 'sun-kissed' look. This highlighting is especially suitable for loose hair and for colouring the regrowth of longer highlightings.
- Babylights: with this form of highlighting we place subtle stripes of colour through the hair in the right way. We focus on the crown and the hair around the face. This highlighting provides subtle effects that give a playful character to your hairstyle and offer the opportunity to emphasise contours in an inconspicuous way.
- Lowlights: formally speaking, lowlights are not a form of Highlights, but the exact opposite. Where with highlighting we color the locks lighter than the rest of your hairstyle, with lowlighting we choose a dark color to achieve the right effect.

Why Ferry's Hairstudio is the right choice
As you can see, with this hair coloring you can choose from many different variations, each of which has its own impact on the way you give depth to your hairstyle and emphasize certain contours of your face.
This makes creating the right Highlights a collaboration between the client and the hairstylist. The fact that our clients trust us is proven by the references we receive. For example, we score 4.9 out of five stars based on hundreds of Google reviews. Do not hesitate and make a appointment with us for your perfect Highlights.
These are three different techniques, each with a unique result. Highlights are created by wrapping specific, contrasting strands in foil from the roots for a distinct, striking depth. Balayage, on the other hand, is a freehand technique applied from the hair's surface, resulting in a softer, more natural, and subtle effect with flowing roots. Finally, Babylights is a form of Highlights where we use extremely fine, subtle foils to create a very natural, sun-kissed effect, primarily around the crown and face.
Both the duration and price depend heavily on the chosen technique, such as Full Highlights or subtle Babylights, and on the length and thickness of your hair. On average, you should expect a treatment time between 2 and 4 hours; we always take plenty of time to guarantee the perfect result. For an exact quote, tailored to your needs, please refer to our online price list or book an intake consultation right away.
To optimally maintain your highlights, proper aftercare is essential. We recommend always using a sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for color-treated hair. It's also important to apply a nourishing hair mask weekly for hydration. To prevent unwanted yellow or warm tones, we recommend using a silver shampoo once a week, as needed.
The frequency of a touch-up depends on the contrast we apply and the rate at which your hair grows. With Traditional Highlights, which we apply from the roots, regrowth usually becomes clearly visible after 8 to 12 weeks. However, if you opt for more subtle options like Babylights or Half Highlights, you can often postpone the touch-up a little longer, until about 10 to 14 weeks.
Your hair health is our top priority. We use only high-quality products and can add bond-building additives (such as Olaplex or similar products) to the dye upon request to minimize the risk of damage. During your consultation, we will always assess the condition of your hair and provide honest and personalized advice on the most suitable and safe treatment for you.
